You can search for a file or a word, within a document, without any difficulties, but it is a different matter if you don't know in which file you should look for a certain word or phrase. This is where dtSearch comes in. It is capable of finding words, phrases or even code fragments in a large number of files. The software allows you to index any number of files, which enables you to find what you are looking for instantly, even if you search in Terabytes of data.

dtSearch is not free, but you can evaluate it for 30 days, without any kind of restrictions. Downloading the installation file may take a minute or two, depending on your Internet connection. The software works on all popular Windows platforms and it has an insignificant impact on a computer's performance.

Before you search for text fragments, you must index your files. The software makes this task quite easy and it is very flexible when it comes to an index's contents. Indexes are saved as files on the hard drive. When you create one, you must name it, specify a destination folder and add new contents, but you can add them at a later date if you want to.

Data can be indexed on a small window, by adding files and folders to a list. It is also possible to import folders from MS Outlook and web sites. Additionally, you can add filters to exclude files with specific names or extensions. Details about the current index, including its file count and size, are displayed on the same window. You can manage existing indexes on a separate window. The software allows you to update an index, with new files, schedule regular updates and more.

If you wish to locate a specific text fragment, in any number of files, you can set up your search criteria on a separate window. You can either type the words yourself or select them from a list and you can choose to search in one index or more. Furthermore, it is possible to prepare a search for all or any words or a Boolean search, with certain conditions, like "and", "or", "not" and others. The software can also look for synonyms, related words or user defined synonyms. Additional options can be found on the same window, but on separate tabs, on which you can filter files by name, size or modification date, view a search history and more.

As previously mentioned, dtSearchdt will find your words instantly and it will display the results, in context, on the main interface. Files that contain the found words are listed on the upper half of the window and you can select one and view its contents on the lower half. The program will highlight the found words automatically, to make them easier to spot. You can select different options, located on a toolbar, to switch between documents or words, to open a selected document with its associated application, print it and more.

Pros

You can find any word, in multiple files, instantly. The software allows you to add files to one or more indexes and filter them by name or extension. You can search in multiple indexes at the same time and set up various search criteria.

Cons

There are no drawbacks to mention. With the powerful indexing and searching features that dtSearch provides, you can locate any word instantly, even if you have to look in thousands of documents.
